The Art of Giving. 10 Ways to Give Back.

Deepak Chopra on the art of giving:

“Every relationship is one of give and take. Giving engenders receiving, and receiving engenders giving. What goes up must come down; what goes out must come back. In reality, receiving is the same thing as giving, because giving and receiving are different aspects of the flow of energy in the universe.”

Practicing the art of giving is actually very simple: if you want joy, give joy to others; if you want love, learn to give love; if you want attention and appreciation, learn to give attention and appreciation; if you want material affluence, help others to become materially affluent."

There are as many reasons to give as there are ways to give.

Generosity is a choice that feels right and joyful. True generosity comes from the innate belief that you have enough to share with others.

The following are 10 ways we can give to benefit others.

1. Give of Your Talents

Teach someone to cook. Give someone an hour of coaching, or a golf lesson. Can you offer child care? Or do you have plumbing, painting, or landscaping skills?

2. Give things.

Clean your home or garage of clutter. Give what you don’t use or need to charity. Your unwanted things could be someone else’s treasure.

3. Give blood.

It’s a great feeling to know you are helping to save someone’s life. Blood is always in need.

4. Give of yourself.

Make someone feel loved, special and appreciated with a visit, phone call, email, text or card. Make a handmade gift. Give praise, gratitude and appreciation.

5. Give some inspiration.

When you come across a quotation or a feel good story, pass it on with a personal “thinking of you” note. It can make someone’s day. Today hand written notes and cards are rare gifts.

6. Give a recommendation.

Enrich someone’s life by sharing the discovery of a great blog, book, restaurant, product or service. Or give a reference on LinkedIn or Facebook. Make someone feel appreciated.

7. Give an invitation.
Being invited to an event means someone wants to spend time with you. When you invite someone into your life you are saying, “You are important to me.”

8. Give encouragement.

When people are filled with doubt and fear they lack courage. When you inspire and motivate someone to act on their dreams, it can be life changing. When you give someone hope, you change their view of the world.

9. Give forgiveness.

Forgiveness is a healing process and lifts a heavy burden from those you exonerate. Forgive yourself and others. Erase the story of what transpired and the meaning you have given it.

10. Give a monetary donation.

Giving away money is difficult because it means less money for you. Give money because others need it. Give money because we’re all dependent on one another.

Consider giving a donation to someone who needs assistance to pay for a funeral. Even $5 or $10 helps and can make a big difference for a family experiencing a loss.

“Give others all that is alive in us—our interest, understanding, our knowledge, our humor, everything in us that’s good. In doing so, we enhance the sense of aliveness in others while enhancing our own. When we give, we get a “heightened vitality” of what it means to be human.” –Erich Fromm
