Hachiko, a white Akita dog, walked Dr. Ueno, his owner, to
the train station in Tokyo every day to commute to work. He met the train at the end of the day to
walk his master home. One day his master
did not return because he suffered a stroke and died at work. Every day for the next nine years and until
his death Hachiko went to the train station an awaited his beloved master
before finally walking home alone.
Word of his faithfulness spread, contributions came in and a
bronze statue was erected at the Tokyo train station at the spot where he
waited. His devotion and loyalty are
known throughout Japan.
